Ethos
SRC combines saving money with sustainable living.
SRC can help you to reduce your energy consumption and the cost of your
utility bills. SRC can advise you and help you to retro-fit the most cost effective sustainable
products to your home, subsidised or paid for by government or energy
providers' grants.
Sustainability is a complex and multi-faceted concept
which often produces contradictions, depending on which aims are
prioritised. SRC considers sustainability in a broader perspective,
taking into acount both climate change and wider environmental issues such
as the sourcing of products from renewable materials, for example,
using FSA certified timber or toxin-free paint. SRC seeks to improve
the ecological qualities of buildings inside and out, considering
the waste hierarchy, the effects of ozone-depleting materials, toxicity
and the effect of products of the health and well-being of a building's
occupants.
The SRC concept puts the reduction of climate change
and CO2 emissions at the heart of sustainable living. However, whilst
energy efficiency is a priority, there is little point in aiming
to reduce carbon emissions by installing products which contain
more embodied carbon in their production, transportation or removal.
This aspect is overlooked by many manufacturers of "green"
products. For this reason we consider the life-cycle analysis of
every product, not only in terms of cost, but in terms of carbon
impact. An example would be to use locally-sourced
renewable timber in favour of uPVC or aluminium for window frames on lower
floors. However, for upper floors where scaffolding would be needed
to install, maintain and repair the window frames, we may recommend
uPVC as it is more durable and requires less maintenance. Because
of the carbon cost of transporting the scaffolding, timber frames
may become both less economical and less sustainable.
High upfront costs have been a major barrier
to sustainable renovation. Sustainable building requires long-term
investment, as people generally seek a quick return on their money.
Tenure and changing occupancy have put up further barriers to investment
in sustainble renovation. SRC facilitates financial benefit for
clients through sustainable renovation by assisting clients to access
government grants and energy schemes which reduce upfront costs. Such schemes will alleviate
or eliminate long pay back periods so that clients will make savings
and get returns quicker than ever.
